Public Awareness towards Dengue Fever in Lahore – 2011

Based upon a Telephonic survey conducted on a random sample of 250 respondents in Lahore

93% of the people are aware of Dengue Fever

A recent survey revealed that 93% of the people living in Lahore are aware of Dengue Fever; followed by 5% not aware and 2% gave no answer. In question that “Is anyone in the family affected by Dengue fever?Only One third (32%) reported that they/their family is affected. When same question was asked for relative and neighborhood little more than half respondent (54%) reported that there is Dengue fever.

When asked about “reasons of spreading Dengue fever?60% people perceived that clean stagnant Water and mosquito (59%) is the main cause, while Dirty Water (28%), Garbage/Pollution (22%) and  others such as hot weather, Rains, Sewerage system (17%).

In answer to the question on precautionary measures, majority of the respondents are using Mosquito’s killer sprays (68%),  mosquito killer coils (31%), applying mosquito repellent body lotion/oils (20%), liquid electric mosquito repellent (13%) , followed by 23% other options such as don’t store water in house, keep water containers covered and take special precautions at the time of sunrise and sunset.

When the respondents were ask about the role of Government in tackling the problem, more than half (55%) respondents perceived that government has failed to play its role properly, while 36% responded that a little effort is done by the government and only 9% people stated that  government is doing a lot of efforts.

When ask about “Source of Awareness from Dengue Fever” 75% people claimed that they get to know about Dengue fever through Television, Newspaper (58%) , Relatives (31%), Physician (17%), internet (8%) and others such as SMS, self study, blogs etc (8%).

Methodology: The survey was carried out on a random sample of 250 respondents in Lahore selected by applying Random Digit Dialing method on Telephone. Survey comprises 50% male and 50% female across all age groups. This survey was carried out during 6th8th September, 2011. Error Margin on this survey is +/- 6 % at 95% confidence level.
